Redeeming World Church of Hammond
" Where great things are happening "
Apostle Paul A. Southerland, Pastor
Bishop James L. Anderson
Founder, Redeeming Church of Christ.
On January 31, 1949, Bishop James L. Anderson answered the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ and established the Redeeming Church of Christ. With Rev. Mary L. McGee, Mother Marie Yarber, a small congregation of men, women and mostly children, the vision took on life.
The earliest years of praise and worship were held at 29th and Wentworth Avenue. As the Word of God went forth, the membership increased.
In 1957, Redeeming expanded to radio broadcasting. The voice of the Holy Spirit spoke and provided I`ll Overcome" as the theme song. Later, this theme featured Rev. Myrtle Jackson as the soloist. This radio broadcast was one of the most listened to ministries in the Chicagoland area--even in its early years.
The growth of this ministry was inevitable. It seemed as though each building, such as 3865 Cottage Grove, 39th King Drive, 4323 Cottage Grove, were unable to house the overflow of new members. The next move was to 20 E. 45th Street. We remained for several years until that building was destroyed by fire. Easter Sunday 1970, we moved to 6920 South Harper. In 1977, after much prayer and soul searching Bishop Anderson was led by God to organize the United Evangelical Churches of Christ, Inc.
On November 16, 1984, Bishop Anderson went to be with our Heavenly Father. The mantle was passed on to Apostle Paul A. Southerland on February 22, 1985.
First, with small steps, then leaps and bounds, the Redeeming Church of Christ, again, grew in numbers and in the knowledge of the Word of God. The Apostle took the vision of the church to the next level. Many souls were saved and lives were changed as a result. At this point the church building at 6920 S. Harper could no longer accommodate the membership growth and needs. A move was on the way. That move led us to 1411 E. 67th Street, our temporary Praise and Worship Center.
Rev. Southerland was given the vision of Redeeming Ministries, Inc. which was incorporated November 24, 1992. It is the umbrella organization for Redeeming Church of Christ, The Hazel Young Academy and Child Care Services, The Ministry for Spiritual Education, and the West South Shore Publishing & Computer Services.
Children have always found a special haven in Redeeming Ministries and our new millennium Child Care Initiative began on June 1, 1999 we began child care services. Rev. Southerland is the CEO of Redeeming Ministries, Inc.
The door was now opened for spiritual growth, education, Christian publishing, and preparation for ministry outreach in the community, on our jobs and in our homes.
With urgency, we "cried loud" Jesus is coming back for all that believe in him as Lord and Savior, to get ready.
In September 2003, Pastor Southerland under the direction of the Holy Spirit took a bold leap of faith and moved Redeeming Church of Christ from 1411 E. 67th St. Chicago, IL to it's present location at 6947 Hohman Ave., Hammond, IN. Here on this 25,000+ sq. ft. facility, the Hazel Young Academy has enrollment from six weeks through 12th grade with hours of operation Monday through Friday 6 am to Midnight, and Saturday 6 am to 8 pm..
